Why you should choose a Word of the Year + 6 helpful tips

By choosing a Word of the Year, it sets an intention, or a theme if you like, for how you want your year to flow.

Picking a Word of the Year is an excellent way to do this. You may just have one word that really sticks out to you for your 2021 theme, or you might have a group of words that you want to set as your intention—it’s totally up to you.

Struggling to pick a word? Here are our 6 tips to choose a word that will resonate with you.

Remember, this isn’t about crossing another goal off your list, it’s about creating a mantra to help guide your daily actions and become a better version of yourself.

Ask yourself what you need

Right now and going into the new year, what do you need? Our word almost always comes from that question. If that word doesn’t immediately resonate with you, use a thesaurus! See if one of the words associated with it does.

Brain dump

Write down all of the words that come into your mind when you think about what you want your year to look like. They can be random words, don’t overthink it, just let the words flow out.

Write down your goals

If you are someone that likes to make a lot of goals or resolutions, write them all down and then see if there’s a theme that’s connecting them. Maybe your word needs to be “Motivation” so that you can tackle all of those things and get them done or “Fit” to inspire you to move more.

Who do you want to be?

It’s always common to want to turn over a new leaf. We can name several qualities we want to cultivate within ourselves. What qualities or traits do you want to bring into your life? Let your word inspire you to be that thing.

Don’t overthink it

Sometimes, your word can take a little while to figure out. Start thinking about it now. Often, it can take months to find the right one. And remember, you don’t need to have it figured out by the time the new year starts. Your word will feel right. You’ll know it when you find it.

Write your word down

Whether it’s written on a gorgeous piece of stationery or a post-it notes, write it down, and put it somewhere you’ll see it every single day! It can go on your desk, on your bathroom mirror, or in your car, just make sure that you are being reminded of what you are focusing on.

Morning rituals to help start your day in a positive way
Morning rituals to help start your day in a positive way

May 09, 2022

If you’re not a morning person, you’re about to be! Which is a good thing because how you start your morning really sets the tone for the rest of your day!! ‘Cause think about it, waking up and rolling over to our phones before getting right to work is something a lot of us do (we’ve all been there!), but how does that make you FEEL? It’s a bit of a bummer, isn’t it? Though making simple, mindful swaps with our mundane morning rituals can flip that script!

Handy hack for decluttering: A place for everything and everything in its place

June 22, 2021

Our homes can feel so full of clutter that it overwhelms us and we give up before we have even started. If we break the mammoth task of decluttering our homes into small parts and baby steps we can make it seem possible. To find those baby steps I developed the Stop, Focus, Notice strategy.
